On April 9th, 2022, a four alarm fire engulfed the piers at Benicia California. The massive fire poured plumes of dense smoke into the air, while reducing the creosote treated structure to smoldering ruins.
Only accessible by fireboats, crews arrived at the scene around 2 pm to find flames leaping up towards silos filled with petroleum coke, a byproduct of producing fuel. While those flames where controlled, fire ignited the pier which burned for 24 hours.
Video shot from one of Moose Boats’ fire boats looks deep into the embers of the blazing furnace that was once a busy Bay Area shipping port. The loss of the port is expected to result in economic hardship for the area.
Among other news outlets, the story was reported on by the Mercury News, the San Francisco Chronicle and Firehouse.
